About the Daytona 500
About the Daytona 500
Known as "The Great American Race," the Daytona 500 is NASCAR's premier event and one of the most famous motorsport races in the world. Held annually each February at Daytona International Speedway in Daytona Beach, Florida, it marks the opening of the NASCAR Cup Series season and attracts more than 100,000 spectators, alongside millions of television viewers worldwide.
Unlike many motorsport championships that build towards a season finale, winning the Daytona 500 is considered one of the highest achievements in stock car racing and often defines a driver's career.
History
The Daytona 500 was first held in 1959, coinciding with the opening of the newly built Daytona International Speedway. The inaugural race was won by Lee Petty, who edged Johnny Beauchamp in one of the closest finishes in motorsport history. The winner was only confirmed after officials reviewed photographs for several days.
The speedway itself was the vision of NASCAR founder Bill France Sr., who wanted a purpose-built superspeedway capable of hosting larger crowds and faster racing than the beach-road course previously used in Daytona Beach.
Since then, the Daytona 500 has grown into NASCAR's biggest event, often compared to the Super Bowl in American football or the Monaco Grand Prix in Formula One.
Daytona International Speedway
The race takes place on the iconic 2.5-mile (4 km) tri-oval Daytona International Speedway.
Features include:
31-degree banking in the turns
Speeds exceeding 200 mph (320 km/h)

Photo-finish endings
The high-speed drafting and slipstreaming create some of the most exciting racing anywhere in motorsport.
