💡 Did you know? The rivalry between Fiorentina and Juventus became particularly intense after the extraordinary conclusion to the 1981–82 Serie A season. The two clubs entered the final day level on points, but Juventus claimed the championship by a single point after beating Catanzaro while Fiorentina were held by Cagliari. Resentment in Florence intensified further in 1990, when Fiorentina's superstar Roberto Baggio was sold to Juventus for what was then a world-record transfer fee. Baggio himself was deeply attached to Florence, and when he later faced Fiorentina as a Juventus player, he famously declined to take a penalty and picked up a Fiorentina scarf thrown towards him as he left the pitch.
